Better Acne Scar Removal Techniques

By: La Hunter

Acne scar removal techniques are much better today than they were a couple of decades ago. Advanced technology, more research and improved facilities have given those, who carry ugly facial scars from previous outbreaks of acne, a variety of solutions that can restore their natural appearance, and rid them of their scars forever. The type of treatment that you choose will depend upon your skin type, and the amount of damage that acne has done to your face.

Some of the available procedures include, dermabrasion, chemical peels, punch grafts, collagen injections and laser treatment. Each one of these methods has associated risks as well as benefits, and in certain cases a combination of procedures may be needed to produce a natural skin tone.

Dermabrasion is carried out by a surgeon at his clinic or surgery. The procedure entails the removal of the outer layer of skin by using a small brush called a burr, which spins at high speed, to plane the outer skin layer away and level any irregularities. This creates a superficial wound that encourages new skin to grow during the healing process, thus replacing the damaged skin.

Dermabrasion is expensive, but quite successful in most cases, the down side is that it can take a long time for the skin to heal, and in some cases, the skin may react negatively, which can leave the patient worse off. The process is not without pain and a certain amount of discomfort.

Chemical peels, refer to the technique of plying the skin with a chemical solution that causes blisters to form, which ultimately burst and peel off. This encourages the growth of new skin, which is fresh and undamaged. This procedure is most effective on mild superficial scarring, and can be carried out by your local doctor at his surgery.

Microdermabrasion is an alternative technique that can be performed at a beauty parlor to treat superficial scars. This process uses a machine similar to a mini sandblaster, to spray the skin with tiny particles and loosen the outer skin layer. Combined with a vacuum action, the machine retrieves the residue, as it moves gently over the scarred portion of skin. The treatment also uses a number of creams and scrubs that will produce the same results. A new growth of fresh skin replaces the damaged surface skin. This technique is effective, non intrusive, relatively cheap and side effects are very rare.

Punch Grafts are carried out by a surgeon, and the procedure is used to heal acne scars that have deeply pitted the surface of the skin. The operation involves excising the pit scar with a biopsy punch tool, the resulting wound is then filled with a graft taken from another part of the patients body. The dressings can be removed in eight to ten days allowing the wound to heal nicely. There may be a slight difference in skin color and, if this is a problem, then a skin resurfacing operation may be carried out after about two months.

Collagen is a protein that is naturally produced by the body, and forms the dermis, or inner skin layer. This substance can be collected, and injected into scarred areas of skin, to fill deep scars and assist in the healing process. There are a number of other substances that surgeons use to fill out the flesh under the skin, in order to hide the scar and produce the same effect. Unfortunately, the results are only temporary, as within about six months the injected collagen will be reabsorbed by the body. If the scar has not completely healed it will become noticeable, and you will need another injection.

Laser treatment for scarring is extremely expensive, however it can be very effective. Lasers vary in type, each one being designed for a particular type of scar. Using a high energy light beam, your surgeon can remove or reshape areas of your skin that have been damaged by acne scars. Laser skin resurfacing can help to rejuvenate and improve the tone of your skin. Laser Treatments are safe and effective, although some patients have suffered from side effects.

Always consult your health care professional before undergoing any surgical procedures.
