When Your Teenagers Face Acne
By: La HunterPuberty is a stressful and trying time for all teenagers and, unfortunately, this is the age group that is most vulnerable to acne attacks. Every parent should recall the turmoil they went through during their adolescence. Physical and psychological changes within the body that are hard to understand, and when advice is sought, the standard reply is that it's just a stage, or it's just part of growing up. Coupled with an outbreak of zits and ugly pimples on the face and neck, it's enough to make any young person become disturbed and withdrawn.
If parents can discuss these matters with their kids, during the few months before the onset of puberty, it will certainly help them to cope with the gawkiness, funny voice, boy boobs, and of course, the horrible pimples. Physical changes among girls are somewhat different, however the emotional upheaval, and the dreaded acne outbreaks make life a living nightmare for them.
Children, who have been forewarned about this trying period of life, will have the advantage of knowing what to expect, and the comfort of being able to discuss the problems they face, with their parents. With the proper guidance, teenagers can adapt to the changes in their bodies, and adopt a daily skin care program, which will help to keep acne at bay.
The increase in hormone activity amongst teenagers, is commonly blamed for causing bouts of acne to occur at this stage of their lives. Simply put, the sebaceous glands become overactive and produce an excessive amount of sebum that soaks the skin, clogs the pores and becomes trapped, causing eruptions of varying degrees on the face, neck, chest, back and arms. What it is exactly that triggers the sebaceous glands to over produce body oil, is a matter for conjecture.
There are a few basic procedures to follow that help cope with acne outbreaks. Only wash the face no more than twice a day with cool or lukewarm water, use only the hands and if soap is needed, make sure that it is mild and natural. Over washing or scrubbing with a flannel will exacerbate the condition. Shower or bathe quickly in warm water, do not scrub the skin, use only mild soap and a mild hair shampoo. Rinse off the soap and shampoo quickly, and pat dry with a soft towel, leaving the skin damp.
Parents should monitor their teens who have acne, to see that they bathe quickly and dry the skin without rubbing. Instruct them not to scratch or squeeze pimples, and to use only mild or natural products on their skin. If topical, over the counter preparations don't control the condition, or it gets worse, then a dermatologist must be consulted.
During adolescence, teenagers need all the love and understanding that they can get. Parents, who have formed a good rapport with their kids before the onset of adolescence, will be more than able to assist their teenagers through this difficult stage of their lives. The children should be encouraged to adopt a proper skin care regimen at an early age, so that they will have the greatest chance of avoiding severe outbreaks of acne.
